Chakras, Your Energetic Body

You’ve heard the words but what is the chakra system and why should you care about it?

Chakras are spinning wheels of energy in your body much like a Spiritual Nervous System. There are many, but more focus is put towards the 7 that travel next to your spine in a line. Each Chakra regulates different attributes. If they are too open or blocked you can be affected spiritually, mentally, & physically.

From top to bottom we have:

Crown Chakra (in the crown of your head)

3rd Eye Chakra (between the brows)

 Throat Chakra (in your throat)

 Heart Chakra (in your chest)

Solar Plexus Chakra (a few finger spaces above your navel)

Sacral Chakra (right below your navel)

Root Chakra (at the tailbone or base of spine)

In this post, I’ll break down the basics of our Spiritual Energy centers and explain how they can affect us mind, body, & soul along with items we can use to keep them balanced. The Chakra System is very involved and by no means can I give you a complete breakdown on working with each Chakra in 1 simple blog post. In the future I will be doing a more in depth paid blog on each chakra alone with more advice on balance and clearing that will include breath work, yoga asanas, crystal placement etc. (That will be me embracing my solar plexus chakra and saying “I am worth being paid for my knowledge and time!”) In the meantime, here is a great overview!

Crown Chakra…What is it?

I begin with the Crown Chakra. Now, traditionally you would begin at the Root Chakra and work your way up. I personally work from the top down because the Chakra system is AMAZING as a manifestation tool when pulling our dreams down to the earth plane. Due to the fact that is the way I generally work with the full system, that’s the order I am introducing you in.

The Crown Chakra is located at the crown of your head and its energetic color is violet. It represents your higher consciousness and your divine connection to your higher self. It’s where your presence is realized as well as where your dreams begin to take shape. Its Sanskrit name is “Sahasrara” which means “thousand-petaled”.

The Crown Chakra is where your connection to your spirituality lives. It reminds us we’re all divine souls in human bodies & there is more to us than what we see. This is also where inspiration begins and dreams start out as sparks of ideas.

Physically our Crown Chakra is associated with our nervous system, pineal gland, and the pituitary gland. When this chakra is unbalanced or blocked you may have a disconnect to spirit. You may feel uninspired, detached from the world, & have trouble getting out of your head. Our attitude may be very cynical and we are very closed minded.

We can help keep this Chakra balanced by eating certain food such as purple grapes, purple kale, purple carrots, eggplant (noticing a theme here?), blueberries, and cocoa. We can use crystals in special ways such as Selenite, Clear Quartz, and Amethyst along with essential oils like Lavender, Jasmine, Sandalwood and many more. ***Disclaimer: Use GOOD QUALITY oils and NOT drug store or Walmart oils. Although I have always been against MLM’s I have found the oils that work best for my family, after years of searching, was dōTERRA. I am now a Wellness Advocate for them & the small amount of money I make sometimes is just what our family needs in the moment. Feel free to visit my sight or choose another reputable company with PURE oils. Link to my business page is http://my.doterra.com/mystikaloils

Third Eye Chakra…What is it?

Moving down from the Crown Chakra we come to the Third Eye or Brow Chakra situated in the center of your eye brows on your forehead. Its color is purple and is tied to your intuition, vision, perception, & psychic illumination. Its Sanskrit name is “Anja” which means perceiving or command.

The Third Eye Chakra is the place we can visualize our hope, dreams, goals, and aspirations. It is here that we can begin to see what we want things to look like that we want to bring to the earth plane. (If you can SEE it, you can BE it) Our intuition also lives here and helps us to trust our instincts in dealings that are brought to us while also being aware that our perception of things comes from our own experiences.

Physically the Third Eye Chakra is connected to our eyes, brain, nervous system, ears, pituitary gland, and pineal gland. When imbalanced we see headaches, vision issues, mental health problems, and scalp issues. We may lack ability to plan well, our memory may slip, and feel frustration over our inability to see our future plans take shape.

This chakra can get help staying balanced with foods such as grapes, blueberries, blackberries, purple cabbage, purple kale, eggplant, salmon, sardines, walnuts, flaxseeds, chia seeds, and apple cider. We can carry and use crystals such as amethyst, purple fluorite, black obsidian, and moldavite. Some awesome oils to use would include rosemary, vetiver, frankincense, juniper, and patchouli.

Throat Chakra…What is it?

Making our way down our next energetic area is the Throat Chakra which is located exactly where it sound it is, in the center of your neck! Its color is aquamarine blue and is tied to your communication, ability to speak clearly and effectively, how you express yourself and your purpose. Its Sanskrit name is “Vissudha” which means pure or purification.

Our Throat Chakra is where we find our voice and our truth. It is where we express our individual personalities and voice our dreams into existence. Our ability to communicate our needs with others in an effective manner. (If we are unable to speak what we need, how can others hear our needs?) The Throat Chakra helps us speak what our purpose is and use words to manifest our dreams.

Physically the Throat Chakra is connected to our mouth, esophagus, thyroid, shoulders, vocal cords, cervical vertebrae, teeth, trachea, and arms. When imbalances happen here we will be withdrawn, shy, and quiet. We can also have the opposite extreme and be arrogant, speak excessively, lie, and lack the ability to listen to others. This often makes us have anxiety. Physically our throat may hurt along with other areas of our mouth and we could loose our voice for what seems no reason.

Helping to keep the Throat Chakra balanced can include eating foods such as blueberries, blackberries, coconut water, raw honey, apples, pears, or plums. We can implement crystals and stones such as turquoise, aquamarine, amazonite, and lapis lazuli. Essential oils for this chakra include rose, frankincense, ylang ylang, sandalwood, neroli, jasmine. (Refer to the link I posted above in the bold paragraph if you want quality oils)

Heart Chakra…What is it?

The Heart Chakra is located in the center of our chest and its color is green. It represents love of course! Love for others and the love we have for ourselves. The Heart Chakra is where our empathy is born and we accept others how they are, not what we want them to be. Its Sanskrit word is “Anahata” which means unhurt.

The Heart Chakra rules our relationships we have on the outside as well as the relationship we have with ourselves. It leads us to forgive and accept with compassion for what another has experienced and in turn do that for ourselves also. (You can’t do better until you know better. Self forgiveness is imperative!) We find transformation here and change into a more healthy version of ourselves to move forward with pride in who we have become.

Physically this chakra rules the heart, circulatory system, lung, thymus gland. When it’s not balanced we can have a lowered immune system, heart/lung and circulation issues, feel isolated, fear intimacy, struggle forgiving, and be overly defensive. We can find ourselves unable to move past our mistakes which can potentially leave us depressed due to the inability to forgive ourselves. These can lead us to want to rescue others from their circumstances to try and cover up our own feeling of inadequacy.

Healing foods for the Heart Chakra include spirulina, wheatgrass, barely grass, avocado, cucumbers, kiwi, green apples, green grapes, limes and green tea. Crystals that are generally used for balance are rose quartz, jade, green calcite, and green tourmaline placed near your heart center. Essential oils you can use are rosemary, lavender, frankincense, sandalwood, chamomile, jasmine, and hyssop.

Solar Plexus Chakra…What is it?

The Solar Plexus Chakra is situated just below the chest where the diaphragm rests and its color is yellow. It rules our self-esteem, pleasure, willpower, personal responsibility, intellect, clarity, beliefs, and independence. It helps with the feeling of control we have over our lives. The Sanskrit word for Solar Plexus is “Manipura” which means gems or city of jewels.

The Solar Plexus gives birth to our confidence. Our “get it done” attitude to keep moving forward through adversity in order to reach our goals. It helps give us clarity to see the light at the end of the tunnel and take responsibility for our part in any road blocks along the way. Our beliefs rest here and give us strength to keep plugging along whether it be with a partner or solo.

Physically the Solar Plexus rules the liver, pancreas, stomach, digestive system, large intestine, adrenal gland, and lungs. When imbalanced we may see digestive issues, problems with blood sugar, acne or dry patches, and food allergies. Our self-esteem is usually affected, manipulative tendencies arise, a misuse of power is possible, and we lack ambition or clear direction.

To keep this chakra balanced you can eat things like squash, pumpkin, corn, oats, sweet potatoes, lemons, yellow pears, lentils, golden apples, yellow and orange peppers, spelt and rice. We can carry crystals such as malachite, calcite, citrine, and topaz. Some essential oils that can be used here are frankincense, sandalwood, chamomile, rosewood, and myrrh.

Sacral Chakra…What it is?

The Sacral Chakra is located about 2 inches below the belly button and its color is orange. It represents our creativity, sexuality, and the center of pleasure, money, flexibility, the power of choice, and promotes emotional wellbeing. The Sanskrit word for the Sacral Chakra is ” Svadhisthana” which means “your own place”.

In the Sacral Chakra we can get comfortable with being creative. Not just crafty but create in general. Create the life you dream, the person you aspire to be, or even creating bonds with others. Our sexuality and passion live here and help us to embrace the more sensual side of ourselves to find a pleasurable existence. Our beliefs about money are rooted here and may need work depending on the conditioning we received as children or by society. It helps us to be flexible and more go with the flow which helps with situations where we have no control.

The Sacral Chakra is the ruler of the kidneys, urinary bladder, reproductive system, and genitals. An imbalance may include sexual and reproductive health problems, anemia, urinary and kidney dysfunctions, low back, hip and joint pain along with an inability to express emotion. We may have a lack of creativity leading to feelings of the mundane.

When we are looking to balance the Sacral Chakra we can eat foods such as oranges, coconuts, melons, sweet fruits, and cinnamon. Perfect crystals and stones to work with include citrine, carnelian, moonstone, and coral. We can wear or diffuse oils like ylang ylang, sandalwood, clary sage, rose and jasmine.

Root Chakra…What is it?

The very last (or first if you work upwards) Chakra in our energetic bodies is the Root Chakra. This Chakra is found right at the base of the spine or groin area and its color is red. The Root Chakra represents or safety, security and stability. It deals with survival grounding, basic needs, and our foundation. The Sanskrit word is “Muladhara” which signifies our foundation and root support.

It’s in the Root Chakra that we have the sense of “home”. It is those basic Maslow Hierarchy Needs that make us feel stable and secure where we are. It is a basic need to feel we are safe and our foundation is unshakable. When a houses foundation is built well the house is more structurally sound and the same is true for our bodies. When our Root Chakra is healthy we can find stability within ourselves regardless of the situation we find ourselves in.

The Root Chakra deals with our blood, vertebral column, feet, teeth, skeleton, and legs. An Imbalance in this area can cause joint and knee pains, constipation, eating disorders, blood disorders, and male reproductive issues including prostate problems. We may feel scattered, anxious, and fearful. You may notice greed due to feeling insecure and excessive negativity.

To restore balance to the Root Chakra we can eat things like beets, radishes, carrots, potatoes, beans, parsnips, onions, garlic, eggs, meats, tofu, peanut butter, chives, pepper, and paprika. Crystals that are recommended include bloodstone. tigers eye, hematite, fire agate, and black tourmaline. Essential oils used for the Root Chakra are rosemary, rosewood, sandalwood, black pepper, cedar, ginger, and cloves.

There it is! All you never knew you needed to know about those energetic centers inside your physical body! Look back and think if you have ever had an unexplained physical issue that isn’t made better with simple western medical treatments. Have you had digestive issues yet you ate well that day and can’t decipher what could be causing your discomfort? Now reflect on how you were feeling emotionally at that time. Was your confidence low or had your power been squashed by an outside source? Your Solar Plexus was probably needing some extra attention and when your confidence slowly built back up, my guess is your tummy issues resolved themselves. See, thats the amazing thing about working with your chakra system, it has the ability to heal ailments western medicine wants to put cover ups on and gets to the actual cause of your unexplained symptom. (Obviously see a Dr if medical issues persist or you personally need reassurance from your medical provider)

I hope you have enjoyed this quick trip through the Chakra System with me! As with most holistic practices, we are constantly needing to adjust our chakra health to keep things balanced in order to prevent excessive or blocked energies from taking a toll on our our mental, emotional, and physical health. We are a work in progress and I personally must always keep those lower 3 Chakras on my radar for blockages as they were shut down for many years. I must tame the upper 4 due to living mostly in my dreams because I lacked the belief that I had the power to make them reality. It is all about balance as most things are and I hope I have given you some insight today on how to manage that balance a little better!
