RV Life…Are you homeless?

This is for all those out there living the full time RV Life or considering it. We ALL have hit walls with others who jump to judgements and the “homeless” word is usually thrown in. Let’s dig into this subject a bit and break it down, not for THEM but for YOU.

When deciding this life many things had to come together. We were not exactly forced per say, but it wasn’t the original plan. That being said, THANK GOODNESS that plan fell through. We had discussed this for later in life so we had been doing on and off research. After much discussion on next steps in our life when original plans became irrelevant, we went in hard. Find the trailer FIRST then a truck that could handle the weight to tow. We began our search and got more and more excited as we went. Even in the frustration at finding something USED and BEFORE 2020 when manufactures slapped things together, that would also hit our price point and needs, we were still so excited.

Of course when you are making big life moves you share your excitement and plans with those you love and care about right? Well, we didn’t exactly get that same excitement back. As an empath I can pick up on so many subtle signs. Even those claiming excitement were feeling worried, concerned, and doubtful of our new journey. But in their defense, they said supportive words and helped a bit when they saw something that may work for us. Others tho… Ugh. Here are some rough quotes of what we heard and how I would respond NOW if they were said to me. At the time I was NOT participating in such conversations and would literally exit the space, text, call, or whatever with a simple “I don’t remember asking your opinion or approval. I shared my news, period.”

“Won’t you be technically homeless?” UMMM…. My home has wheels and if I don’t like the view or neighbors, I can move. My HOME also has everything your home has. Home is a feeling anyway that I take with me everywhere. This way my HOUSE is with me also.

“Where will you get mail?” Do you realize how many people are living full time RV Life? There are a ton of services that assist you and there are places to have things shipped. Truly…go see how popular this is!

“What will you do for money?” We have a plan for income along with my husbands photography business and my Astrology/Metaphysical services being virtual. Are you paying our bills because that is actually none of your business. (YES! Be firm with BOUNDARIES!!)

“What if something goes wrong and you break down?” What if I told you I have full faith in my husband and myself to figure out any situation that arises. YouTube is full of knowledge and ANY full timer will tell you to get familiar with YouTube RV channels.

“So how long is this happening? Will you ever live in a regular house again?” Why? You seem to be putting a lot of energy into how we are choosing to live our lives and what our future may hold. How about you focus on your long term goals, were good here

If I had it to do again, I would have for sure addressed these in the moment because I have more than addressed them since. Do you HAVE TO explain yourself to others? Absolutely not! I am huge on living your life in ways that fill your soul and others do not need explanation. That being said, pushy family can get annoying or kill your vibe before you even get a chance to be out your door. I would have replied with kindness but also make it clear, THIS IS SO COMMON AND THIS IS NOT HOMELESS!!!

In the grand scheme of things, people are living this life in rigs and set ups that many questioning YOU could never afford. This life IS NOT cheap and someone who I would maybe view as unhomed, would have a hard time with repairs and provisions. Do people go from homeless into an RV? YEP!! They are usually stationary and a space in an RV park can be cheaper than the rent and deposit most places require for sticks and brick living. (Some even want a few months rent!). These people are usually gifted an RV of some sort or purchase one that is meant to stay stationary. (It may have issues with tires or the frame which make it perfect to live in, but not so much moving around)

Other people won’t understand why you are purchasing something that depreciates in value if you have, or are planning to sell your house and go on this adventure. I have a questions here…Why is this ANYONE’S concern? Why are they interjecting their opinion into your financial portfolio? Would that be acceptable to you in any other circumstance? YOUR finances and your financial decisions are nobody’s business and it is very intrusive for them to assume they should be entitled to this information.

Many of us who are doing this are doing this because STUFF has lost its value and memories and adventure have taken its place. We don’t want equity, we want experiences. We don’t want big floor plans, we want big change. We don’t care about saving money until we are too old to enjoy it, we want to work hard and play hard simultaneously. We aren’t about the 9-5 job paying for a house that may never be paid off before we leave this earth. Personally, my HOME and her friend that pulls her is paid off. It can’t be taken from me and THAT has been so freeing! Whatever YOUR personal reasons are for choosing this life, or researching this life, DO NOT let others judgements on what THEY assume this life to entail stop you. Even IF it all falls apart and you end up back in a sticks and bricks, you DID SOMETHING! You had experiences, learned lessons, followed your heart, and went against what society has labeled “normal”. THAT in itself is a huge accomplishment many others let fear hold them back from. In any case, live your life and don’t let others dictate what that life looks like!

Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts! I LOVE this life and although it has its challenges, my husband and I are so rewarded with the freedom and peace we have away from what society pushes on people as “normal”.
